چکیده

The aim of the prcscnt study was to deterrnine whethcr oxygcn supply to non-exereiscd muscle during recovery fbllowing fatiguing cxcrcisc is infiuenced by accumulated mctabolitcs within exercised muscle, IXvclvc healthy male subjects performed 2-min isometric handgrip exercise at 40% maximal voluntary contraction with their right hand and the exercise was fbllowed by a 3-min recovery period. Muscle oxygen saturation (Sm02) dctermincd by nearinfrared spatially resolved spcctroscopy was used as an index of oxygen supply to non-cxercised musc]e and was measurcd in biceps brachii and tibialis anterior musclcs on the left side. Compared to the pre-exercise baseline level, Sm02 in the biceps brachii muscle (SmO,BB) increased significantly from 30 sec to 1 min after the start of exercise, whi]e Sm02 in the tibialis antcrior muscle (Sm02m) rernained stable during the initial 1 rnin of exercise. Both Sm02BB and Sm02TA began to decrease at about 1 min and continued to decrease thereaftcr, Due to the initial increase in Sm02BB, only Sm02Ts showed a significant decrcasc during exercise. During recovery, Sm02BB did not differ significantly from the pre-cxcrcisc baseLine ievel, whereas Sm02-N remained significantly lower until about 1,5 min ofrecovery and thcn it did not di ffer significantly from the baseline lcvel. In another bout, subjects per{brmed handgrip exercise of the same intensity, but post-cxercise arterial occlusion (PEAO) of the exercised muscle was imposed for 2 min immediately aftcr the end of exereise. During PEAO. SniO?BB decreased sjgnlficantly compared to the baseline ]cvcl, whereas Sm02TA rcmaincd significantly ]ower until the end of PEAO, The sjgnificant decrease in SmOnR and thc prolongation ofdccrcasc in Sm02TA by PEAO suggests that the recovery ofSrn02 in the non-exercised arm and leg is mcdiated by muscle metaboreceptors, JPdysiolAnthmpol 27av.' 83-9i, 2008http:/lwww.jstage.jst.go,jpibrowseijpa2 [DOI: 10.2214ijpa2.27.83]

Absence of gender differences in the fatigability of the forearm muscles during intermittent isometric handgrip exercise.

Previous studies have reported women to have a greater resistance to fatigue than men during sustained handgrip exercise, however, observed gender differences in fatigue has been shown to be a function of contraction type. The purpose of the present study was to determine if gender differences exist in forearm muscle fatigue during intermittent handgrip contractions. Women [n = 11, 23.5 ± 1.5 (...

Impact of heart failure and exercise capacity on sympathetic response to handgrip exercise.

Peak oxygen uptake (VO(2 peak)) in patients with heart failure (HF) is inversely related to muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) at rest. We hypothesized that the MSNA response to handgrip exercise is augmented in HF patients and is greatest in those with low VO(2 peak). We studied 14 HF patients and 10 age-matched normal subjects during isometric [30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)...

Oral contraceptives augment the exercise pressor reflex during isometric handgrip exercise

We sought to determine whether oral contraception alters the gender-related differences observed in the exercise pressor reflex during isometric handgrip exercise. Fifteen men, fifteen normally menstruating women (WomenNM), and fifteen women taking monophasic oral contraceptives (WomenOC) completed two trials of a 3-min isometric handgrip exercise protocol performed at 30% of their maximal volu...

Hyperoxia enhances metaboreflex sensitivity during static exercise in humans.

Peripheral chemoreflex inhibition with hyperoxia decreases sympathetic nerve traffic to muscle circulation [muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA)]. Hyperoxia also decreases lactate production during exercise. However, hyperoxia markedly increases the activation of sensory endings in skeletal muscle in animal studies. We tested the hypothesis that hyperoxia increases the MSNA and mean blood p...

Acute effect of dietary nitrate on forearm muscle oxygenation, blood volume and strength in older adults: A randomized clinical trial

Both recovery time of post-exercise muscle oxygenation and muscle strength decline with aging. Although beetroot consumption has been shown to improve muscle oxygenation and exercise performance in adults, these effects in the elderly has not been addressed. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a beetroot-based gel (BG) on muscle O2 saturation, blood volume (tHb) and handg...
